Does America really run on “Dunkin”? I must admit that I am a big fan of their “manager’s special” donut, but America really runs on jobs. Last Friday, the job’s report headline read 'more jobs created in the month of April.' And, the market soared. But what the headline didn’t tell you is that 8.5 million were unemployed and 6.2 million were employed part-time. It also left out the fact that many people who do have jobs may have two or three of them just to make ends meet. Don’t forget that a lot of people are also just squeaking by on minimum wage.
Investment Management Tips: Take News Headlines With A Grain of Salt
Successful investors take headlines with a grain of salt and look at the bigger picture. Jumping in and out of the market based upon the daily headlines will probably cause you to experience anxiety and possibly lose money. Think of headlines as your GPS or road map that points you in a certain direction. Are the headlines supported by real facts? Just like you use a road map, use each fact as a “marker” that gets you from point A to point B. If one fact doesn’t support the headline pay attention to the “detour." It doesn’t mean that your investing journey won’t be successful; it just may take a little more time.
